TR Troubleshooting - Router Problems

Is the failure symptom that particular protocols are not being passed through to another ring?
Go to page 8.1.

Is the failure symptom that no data traffic can get from one side of the router to the other, or that data is intermittently getting corrupted when passed through the router?

Is the failure symptom that only partial data traffic can pass across the router?

Is the failure symptom that an overloaded bandwidth condition is present on a certain ring?

This procedure is generic as to the router manufacturer. For some of the troubleshooting steps mentioned on this page, reference the router manufacturer's documentation for any special predefined methods for checking router configuration and for router testing.

8.1 Particular protocols are not being passed through to another ring.

Thoroughly check the router's software and hardware configuration, as related to the router's protocol-routing table.

Are any incorrect configuration parameters present in the router's protocol-routing table, as related to the specific protocol that is not properly being passed through to the destination ring?

Take the necessary action to resolve the problem and retest the router for proper operation. If the failure symptom is gone, record the problem in the network maintenance and service log. If the problem still exists after retesting, go to the next step .

Attempt to run router diagnostics.

Did running the diagnostics produce any errors tha t identify a router failure?

Take the necessary action to resolve the problem and retest the router for proper operation. If the failure symptom is gone, record the problem in the network maintenance and service log. If the problem still exists after retesting, go to the next step .

A configuration problem may still exist with the router, but to get more conclusive fault-isolation data, go to page 15.

When running a protocol analysis session on the ring, keep in mind that a router's main purpose is to connect rings that need to share the same protocols; they must understand and be configured for the protocol that they are forwarding.

If after using this procedure you cannot conclusively locate the problem and you continue to find failure symptoms that point to a router problem, reference the manufacturer's instructions.

8.3 Only partial data traffic can pass across the router.

Thoroughly check the software and hardware configuration of the router.

Take the necessary action to resolve the problem and retest the router for proper operation. If the failure symptom is gone, record the problem in the network maintenance and service log. If the problem still exists after retesting, go to the next step .

Check the ring for source-routing problems with certain ring stations. Thoroughly examine the Routing Information field of the frames that are not being passed through the router.
Keep in mind that a particular ring station can have a software application configuration problem in relation to the source-routing field that it is directly transmitting.

Did examining the ring for source-routing problems locate any specific problems with a certain ring station's Routing Information field?

Take the necessary action to resolve the source-routing problems with the respective ring station's source-routing parameters, and then retest the router for proper operation. If the failure symptom is gone, record the problem in the network maintenance and service log. If the problem still exists after retesting, go to the next step .

Attempt to gather more conclusive fault-isolation data by thoroughly examining the Routing Information field from all the frames that are not being passed through the router. Go to page 15 .

If after using this procedure you cannot conclusively locate the problem and continue to find failure symptoms that point to a router problem, reference the manufacturer's instructions.

8.4 An overloaded bandwidth condition is present on a certain ring.

Thoroughly check the router for any incorrect configuration parameters that can control the amount of traffic to be forwarded to another ring.

Check the source ring for source-routing problems with certain ring stations. Thoroughly examine the Routing Information field of the frames possibly causing bandwidth problems in the destination ring .

Attempt to gather more conclusive fault-isolation data. Go to page 15.

Thoroughly examine the Routing Information field from all the frames for incorrect addressing information for source routing that may be causing an overhead problem from one ring to another. Look closely at the percentage of frames being forwarded that are overloading the destination ring with traffic.
If after using this procedure you cannot conclusively locate the problem and continue to find failure symptoms that point to a router problem, reference the manufacturer's instructions.
